What Is Kempo Goju?

 

Kempo-Goju Karate is a dynamic martial-art system that blends the swift, circular hand techniques of Chinese-style Kempo with the powerful strikes, blocks, and structured forms of traditional “hard-soft” karate. Originally developed in Milwaukee in 1970 by Charles Warren, the style was designed to forge well-rounded fighters — physically strong, technically versatile, and grounded in deep discipline and character. Charles Warren was a direct student and Black Belt of Jitsumi Gōgen Yamaguchi. Over the decades, Kempo-Goju has built a reputation not only for effectiveness in self-defense and competition, but also for cultivating values of respect, resilience and lifelong growth.

Kempo-Goju Karate is represented through multiple accredited schools across the United States and abroad. Our organization maintains established locations throughout the state of Wisconsin, as well as additional schools in Mississippi. Internationally, Kempo-Goju is also taught in Europe, including a recognized branch in Kosovo.

What Age Groups Do You Accept for Training?

Kempo-Goju Karate welcomes students of all ages, from young children to adults well into their senior years. While our structured programs typically begin at age 5, we may accept younger children who demonstrate the necessary focus and readiness for training. We are equally committed to supporting our older generations—many of our practitioners train actively into their 70s and 80s.
Our instructors are experienced in working with individuals who have injuries, physical limitations, or mobility concerns, and we tailor training appropriately to ensure safety, comfort, and steady progress. We invite all prospective students to visit and try a class, so we can assess their needs and recommend the most suitable path for their development.
